Ultra-Drain Guards®

Curb-Insert Style

Stop oil, sediment, and other debris from entering curb inlets and catch basins

Combination drains present a bit of a challenge when it comes to stormwater products. Protecting the "dual openings" of curb-inlet and street drain can complicate designs.

The Ultra-Drain Guard, Curb-Insert Style starts with the standard Drain Guard then adds additional fabric and a tension rod. The tension rod keeps the material in place so that it can filter pollutants from water flowing into the curb inlet. And the part of the Drain Guard inserted into the catch basin handles the rest.

Key Features:
  • For use with combination catch basins with a street grate and curb opening.
  • Heavy-duty tension rod secures Drain Guard inside curb inlet — stopping sediment and other contaminants from entering curb portion of the storm drain.
  • Fits grate sizes up to 40” x 40” and curb inlets up to 60” wide.
 Compliance:
  • Helps comply with NPDES, 40 CFR 122.26 (1999) and TMDL requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a Drain Guard last?
It is difficult to arrive at a definitive answer for this as there are several factors that will determine how long an Ultra-Drain Guard will last after it has been installed.  The amount of rainfall and the amount and type of pollutants that the unit will be exposed to, among other things will determine the Drain Guard's life expectancy.  For this reason, we recommend inspecting the unit after each significant rain event to better understand how much each Drain Guard will capture.  We have had test units in Seattle as well as Florida that were still working effectively after more than a year after installation.

Do I have to take the grate out of the storm drain to install an Ultra-Drain Guard?
Yes.  While we do have some stormwater products that do not require the grate to be lifted, the Ultra-Drain Guard, Curb-Insert Style does require that you first lift the grate.

What do I do with the Drain Guard when I'm done with it?
If the unit has only been used to remove dirt, sand, and sediment from the incoming stormwater flow, it can be disposed of like any other trash/waste.  If oil/grease or any other hydrocarbons have been absorbed by the geotextile material, it must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations and requirements.

How much water can the Drain Guard handle?
When new, the Drain Guard has a flow rate of 90 gpm/ft2. However, the unit has been designed with overflow ports.  These allow the Drain Guard a flow rate of 770 gpm which will prevent any flooding or ponding during extreme rain events.  Any water that goes through the overflow is essentially untreated.

Can the Ultra-Drain Guard be reused?
Yes, under most circumstances.  If the Drain Guard is filled with sand, silt, and sediment, it can be removed from the drain, emptied out and replaced.  Trash and debris can also be removed.  The exception is if the Drain Guard is saturated with oil, gas or other hydrocarbons.  Because these pollutants can be flushed out of the Drain Guard by a major rain event, it is recommended that the units be replaced instead of reused.

Why do you use X-Tex for this product?
X-Tex (used only in the "Plus" Models) removes oil and other hydrocarbons much faster than traditional absorbents.  A polypropylene sorbent material will not allow water to freely pass through it.  Oil will absorb at the surface of a polypropylene absorbent, and the polypropylene will eventually blind over and the center will not absorb any oil.

Is hardware included?
Yes, you will receive everything you need including the hardware (tension rods).  No other parts, pieces or components will be necessary to install/use your Drain Guard.

What other products could be used instead of the Drain Guard?
An Inlet Guard (Curb-Style) would be a good option to the Drain Guard, Curb-Insert Style.  The main difference being the installation process (the Inlet Guard lays on top of the drain and is held in place with heavy-duty magnets).  You can also check out the Path to the Perfect Product to see what other products might be a good option.
